James Story In December 2001 James received news that would change his life forever. At age 31, he was diagnosed with oral cancer. Specifically, adenocystic carcinoma of a salivary duct. His surgery in January 2002 took 12 hours: two to remove the cancer and ten to reconstruct his palate, jaw and face. The surgery and subsequent radiation treatments left James cancer free. He was fitted with a prosthesis to replace lost teeth and has had annual scans and post-cancer checkups for fifteen years. As of January, 2017 he no longer will need yearly scans. His doctor has declared him a “NERD”: No Evidence of Recurring Disease!
Public awareness campaigns of the need for regular oral cancer screening, early detection and ongoing research is the work of the Oral Cancer Foundation. Through your participation and support for the Twin Cities Oral Cancer Walk we are hopeful that there will be many more success stories such as James.
